Complete answers to every question Karnataka SC/ST students ask about the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship 2026

This FAQ compiles every question Karnataka SC/ST students have asked Easy Admissions about the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship across multiple scholarship cycles. Answers reflect the current 2026 IGCCD guidelines, not the outdated Prabhuddha scheme rules that continue to circulate online. If your question is not here, call 1800 102 9968.

Section 1: The Basics

What is the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship?

It is the Karnataka State Government's fully funded overseas education scholarship for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students. Administered by IGCCD under the Department of Social Welfare, it covers full tuition fees, maintenance allowance of up to Rs 8 lakh per year, and medical insurance for eligible students pursuing postgraduate or doctoral study at recognised foreign universities.

Is this the same as the Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship?

Yes. The Government of Karnataka officially renamed the Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship to the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship. The scheme itself continues, now administered through IGCCD rather than PETC. The eligibility criteria have been updated — the age limit, income treatment, and university recognition requirement have all changed from the old scheme.

Where do I apply in 2026?

The current application is through the IGCCD Karnataka portal at igccd.karnataka.gov.in. Do not apply on the old PETC portal (petc.kar.nic.in) — that handled the previous Prabhuddha scheme and is no longer the correct portal for this scholarship.

Is the 2026 portal open right now?

Yes. The IGCCD portal is open and accepting applications for 2026. The portal accepts applications throughout the year, meaning there is no single fixed closing date for the scholarship itself. What has time pressure is the university intake deadline — specifically September 2026 for UK and Australia universities.

What does the scholarship actually cover?

Full tuition fees for the complete course duration at the recognised foreign university. Maintenance allowance of up to Rs 8 lakh per year or 75% of actual living expenses, whichever applies. Full medical insurance for the duration of study abroad. Additionally, 33% of scholarship seats are reserved for women and 5% for candidates with physical disabilities.

Which fields of study are covered?

Nine approved fields as per IGCCD: Engineering and Management, Pure and Applied Sciences, Agriculture Sciences and Medicine, International Commerce, Economics, Accounting and Finance, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts and Law. This covers the vast majority of postgraduate and doctoral programs available at UK and Australia universities.

Section 2: Eligibility

Who is eligible? Is it only for SC students or ST students too?

Both Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students are eligible. The scholarship is open to permanent residents of Karnataka from either SC or ST community. Any source stating this is an SC-only scheme is providing incorrect information from the old scheme documentation.

What is the age limit? I read it is 35 years — is that correct?

No. The 35-year limit belongs to the old Prabhuddha scheme and is incorrect for the current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship. The current IGCCD 2026 limits are: below 40 years for PG programs, and below 45 years for PhD programs. If you are between 35 and 39 and were told you are too old, that assessment is wrong. Verify at igccd.karnataka.gov.in or call 1800 102 9968.

Is there an income limit? My family earns above Rs 8 lakh.

The old Prabhuddha scheme reduced scholarship coverage for families above Rs 8 lakh. The current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship under IGCCD does not apply those income slabs in the same way. An income certificate is required as a supporting document, but family income above Rs 8 lakh does not automatically disqualify you or reduce your scholarship entitlement under the current scheme. For a detailed eligibility check, see our 2026 eligibility guide.

Do I need to get into a Top 325 university?

No. The Top 325 requirement was from the old Prabhuddha scheme. The current IGCCD 2026 guidelines specify a recognised foreign university, without that explicit ranking restriction. This opens up a wider range of institutions across the UK and Australia.

Is the scholarship available for UG students?

No. The Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship covers PG and PhD programs only. UG students should look at the separate IGCCD UG overseas scholarship scheme, which is a different programme with different criteria.

I am from a small Karnataka town, not Bengaluru. Am I still eligible?

Yes. The scholarship is open to permanent residents of all 30 Karnataka districts. Students from Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Shivamogga, Davangere, Udupi, Ballari, Vijayapura and every other part of the state are equally eligible. Easy Admissions provides full remote support for students from every Karnataka district.

Section 3: Documents

What documents do I need?

For IGCCD: Aadhaar (linked to bank account), SC/ST caste certificate from Karnataka revenue authority, income certificate (current year), Karnataka domicile proof, UG degree certificate, all semester mark sheets, valid passport, and bank account details. For the university application: SOP, LORs, IELTS/TOEFL/PTE or MOI letter, and updated CV. The complete checklist with scan specifications is in our documents guide.

My caste certificate is from another state. Is it accepted?

No. The caste certificate must be issued by a Karnataka revenue authority — a Tahsildar or Deputy Commissioner from a Karnataka district. Certificates from other states are not accepted. If your certificate is from another state, you need to obtain a fresh Karnataka certificate from your current district Tahsildar office before applying.

My name is different on my Aadhaar and my degree certificate. What do I do?

Resolve this before applying. Options include updating Aadhaar via the UIDAI portal (2 to 4 weeks), obtaining a notarised affidavit explaining the name variation, or a gazette notification for the name change. IGCCD cross-verifies names across all documents — a mismatch will stall your application. Call 1800 102 9968 and we will advise on the fastest resolution for your specific situation.

Do I need the offer letter before applying to IGCCD?

No — and this is critical. You can begin and partially complete your IGCCD application without the offer letter. You should start the IGCCD registration immediately. The offer letter is needed to finalise the scholarship application, not to begin it. The IGCCD application and university application should run simultaneously from day one.

Section 4: IELTS and Language Requirements

Do I need IELTS to apply for this scholarship?

IELTS is required for the university application, not the IGCCD portal itself. Most UK and Australia universities require IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall for PG admissions. Some programs at competitive institutions require 7.0. TOEFL and PTE are also accepted as alternatives.

Can I get an IELTS waiver?

Possibly. If your entire undergraduate degree was taught in English, some UK and Australia universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your institution's Registrar as a language waiver. This is not universally available — it depends on the university and the program. Easy Admissions advises on MOI waiver eligibility for each student's specific profile. Call 1800 102 9968 before booking an IELTS test if you think you may qualify for this route.

My IELTS score is 2 years old. Is it still valid?

IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. If your test was more than 2 years ago at the time of university application submission, you will need to re-sit. Check the exact expiry date before applying to any university.

Age limit is 40 for PG and 45 for PhD, not 35 — and income above Rs 8 lakh does not automatically disqualify Karnataka SC/ST applicants

Section 5: Application Process

How does the application process work?

There are two parallel tracks. Track A is the IGCCD scholarship portal application. Track B is the university application (UK or Australia). Both must run simultaneously from day one. The offer letter produced in Track B is required to complete Track A. The step-by-step process for both tracks is in our complete IGCCD application guide.

How long does the process take from start to departure?

From first contact with Easy Admissions to offer letter: typically 2 to 4 weeks through our direct university pipeline. From offer letter to IGCCD scholarship confirmation: 4 to 8 weeks depending on application completeness. Visa processing: 3 to 5 weeks for UK, 4 to 8 weeks for Australia. Total from starting today to September 2026 departure: 10 to 14 weeks if everything moves without delay.

How long does IGCCD take to process?

Typically 4 to 8 weeks from a complete application submission, including the university offer letter. Incomplete applications, document mismatches, or missing Aadhaar-bank linkage add significant delays. Complete, correctly submitted applications move considerably faster.

My application was rejected. What should I do?

IGCCD rejections typically come with a stated reason — document mismatch, incomplete information, or ineligibility. Most rejections for eligible students are fixable with a corrected resubmission, though this adds 3 to 6 weeks. If your application was rejected and you believe you are eligible, call 1800 102 9968. We review rejection notices and advise on the correct resubmission approach.

Section 6: September 2026 Intake — Urgent

Can I still make September 2026 if I am starting now in July?

Yes, through Easy Admissions. While standard consultancy portals have closed for September, Easy Admissions maintains a direct university admission pipeline to UK and Australia institutions that allows offer letters to be secured through mid-August. For eligible profiles with complete documents, September 2026 is still achievable. Read our last minute admissions guide for the full process.

What if I miss September 2026?

Australia's next primary intake is February 2027. UK universities have limited January 2027 options for PG programs — most UK Masters programs run September only. If September 2026 is not achievable for your profile, Easy Admissions will tell you honestly and help you plan properly for the next available intake rather than leaving you in limbo.

Does the IGCCD scholarship itself have a September deadline?

No. The IGCCD portal accepts applications throughout the year. The deadline pressure is on the university side, not the scholarship side. Securing the offer letter from the university within the September intake window is what drives urgency. Once the offer letter is secured, the IGCCD application can be completed and processed at any point.

Section 7: Universities and Destinations

Which countries can I study in?

Any country with recognised foreign universities, as per IGCCD guidelines. Easy Admissions specialises in placements to the United Kingdom and Australia for Karnataka scholarship students — both destinations offer the strongest combination of program availability, scholarship compatibility, post-study work rights, and financial fit with the maintenance allowance.

Are Russell Group universities and Go8 universities recognised?

Yes. All Russell Group UK universities and all Group of Eight Australian universities are globally recognised institutions accepted under the IGCCD scholarship framework. Easy Admissions confirms specific university and course recognition before any application is submitted.

UK or Australia — which is better for scholarship students?

UK is stronger for students targeting Management, Finance, Law, and Social Sciences who want a 1-year program and faster return to India. Australia is stronger for students targeting STEM, Engineering, Agriculture, and Environmental Science who want longer post-study work rights of 2 to 4 years. The answer depends entirely on your academic background and career goals.

Will the maintenance allowance be enough to live on?

In UK cities outside London — Manchester, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Birmingham, Leeds — yes, the allowance of up to Rs 8 lakh per year covers living costs comfortably. In Australia, it covers costs well in Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, and Brisbane. Students in London or Sydney typically need to supplement through part-time work, which is permitted on both UK Student Visa and Australia Student Visa. Easy Admissions factors city living costs against the allowance when shortlisting universities for each student.
