Dr. BR Ambedkar Scholarship Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Income, SC/ST Criteria and Who Actually Qualifies

The age limit is not 35. The income slab structure has changed. ST students are eligible, not just SC. If you have read the eligibility criteria anywhere online and walked away thinking you do not qualify, read this before accepting that conclusion.

Current IGCCD 2026 eligibility: age limit is below 40 for PG and below 45 for PhD, not 35 as stated on many websites

Wrong Eligibility Information Is Circulating Online

As of June 2026, multiple scholarship aggregator websites are publishing outdated eligibility criteria for this scheme. The information they show belongs to the old Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship, not the current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship under IGCCD.

If you have read that the age limit is 35, that only SC students qualify, or that your family income makes you ineligible, verify against the current IGCCD 2026 guidelines below before making any decision.

Who This Guide Is For

I am S. Krishnamurthy, Senior Study Abroad Counsellor at Easy Admissions in Bengaluru. Every week students from across Karnataka call us having already decided they are not eligible for the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship. In most cases they based that decision on information from a website that was describing the old Prabhuddha scheme rules.

This guide sets out the current eligibility criteria as per IGCCD Karnataka's 2026 guidelines. Read through every criterion carefully. If you are unsure about any single point, call us on 1800 102 9968 before concluding you do not qualify. The call is free, takes 15 minutes, and has reversed a wrong eligibility assessment for more students than I can count.

Before checking eligibility, use our free eligibility calculator to get an instant read on your profile. Then read through the detailed criteria below.

Outdated Prabhuddha scheme rules are still circulating online in 2026 — this guide corrects age limit, income, and SC/ST eligibility errors

Age Limit: The Most Misunderstood Criterion

The age limit question is the single most common source of wrong eligibility assessments for Karnataka SC/ST students. Here is why the confusion exists and what the correct position is.

The old Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship stated an age limit of 35 years for PG applicants. This figure is still widely reproduced across scholarship databases, aggregator websites, and social media posts in 2026. It is outdated and does not apply to the current scheme.

Under the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship as currently administered by IGCCD, Karnataka, the age limits are:

PG Programs

40

Below 40 years at time of application

PhD Programs

45

Below 45 years at time of application

If you are 36, 37, 38 or 39 years old and applying for a PG program: you are within the eligible age range under the current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship. If someone told you that you are too old based on the 35-year limit, that assessment used outdated criteria. Call us on 1800 102 9968 to re-verify your eligibility before giving up on this application cycle.

Income Limit: What the Current Scheme Actually Says

The old Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship had a clear income slab structure: families earning below Rs 8 lakh per year received 100% funding, Rs 8 to 15 lakh received 50%, and above Rs 15 lakh received 33%. This structure is still widely published online as if it applies today.

Under the current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship through IGCCD, the income slab structure does not apply in the same way. An income certificate is required as a supporting document for the IGCCD application, but the current guidelines do not impose the same fixed income ceiling that the old Prabhuddha scheme did.

Practical guidance: SC/ST students from Karnataka across income backgrounds are encouraged to check their eligibility directly. Do not assume you are ineligible because your family income exceeds Rs 8 lakh or Rs 15 lakh. Call 1800 102 9968 or use our free eligibility calculator to get a current, accurate assessment before making any decision.

SC and ST Both Eligible: Not Just SC

A significant number of Scheduled Tribe (ST) students from Karnataka have been incorrectly told they do not qualify for this scholarship. Some consultancies and websites describe it as an SC-only scheme. This is factually wrong.

The Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship under IGCCD explicitly covers both Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students who are permanent residents of Karnataka. If you belong to an ST community and hold a valid Karnataka ST caste certificate, you are eligible to apply under the same criteria and the same portal as SC students.

Approved Fields of Study: What Courses Are Covered

The scholarship covers PG and PhD programs in nine approved fields as listed by IGCCD Karnataka. If your intended course falls within any of these disciplines, it is potentially eligible:

Engineering and Management

MSc Engineering, MBA, MSc Project Management, MSc Computer Science, MSc Data Science, MSc AI

Fine Arts and Law

Who Does Not Qualify: Be Clear Before Applying

Not Eligible
Why
Students from OBC, General, or other non-SC/ST categories
The scheme is exclusively for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. OBC students should look at the National Overseas Scholarship or other government schemes.
SC/ST students from other states (not Karnataka)
This is a Karnataka State Government scheme. Only permanent residents of Karnataka are eligible. SC/ST students from other states should apply for the National Overseas Scholarship or their respective state government schemes.
UG (undergraduate) students
The Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship under IGCCD covers PG and PhD programs only. UG students should look at the separate IGCCD UG overseas scholarship scheme.
Applicants above the age limit
PG applicants 40 years or older, and PhD applicants 45 years or older, are outside the current IGCCD age criteria. Note: age is checked at time of application, not at time of course commencement.
Students whose degree is not yet complete
You must have completed and passed your undergraduate degree. Students in their final year whose results have not yet been declared cannot fully complete the IGCCD application. A provisional certificate is accepted once results are declared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the age limit really 40 years for PG and not 35?

Yes. The current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship under IGCCD Karnataka sets the age limit at below 40 years for PG programs and below 45 years for PhD programs. The 35-year figure belongs to the old Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship and is no longer applicable. If you are between 35 and 39 years old, you are within the eligible age range for PG under the current scheme.

Are ST students eligible or only SC students?

Both SC and ST students are eligible. The Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship explicitly covers Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students who are permanent residents of Karnataka. Any website or consultancy that says this is an SC-only scheme is providing incorrect information.

My family earns above Rs 8 lakh. Am I still eligible?

The old Prabhuddha scheme had income slabs that reduced the scholarship percentage for families above Rs 8 lakh. The current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship under IGCCD does not apply those slabs in the same way. An income certificate is required as a document, but SC/ST students across income backgrounds should verify directly with IGCCD or Easy Admissions before assuming they do not qualify on income grounds.

Do I need to get into a Top 325 university to qualify?

The Top 325 requirement was from the old Prabhuddha scheme. Current IGCCD guidelines for the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship specify a recognised foreign university, without that explicit ranking restriction. Easy Admissions verifies recognition of specific universities and courses before any application is submitted.

Can I apply if my UG results have not yet been declared?

You must have completed your undergraduate degree and results must be declared before your IGCCD application can be finalised. A provisional certificate is accepted once results are out. If you are still awaiting final results, begin the university application process now through Easy Admissions so no time is lost once results are declared.
