Why These Stories Matter
I am S. Krishnamurthy, Senior Study Abroad Counsellor at Easy Admissions in Bengaluru. The most common thing eligible students tell me when they first call is: "I did not think someone like me could actually do this." That sentence contains everything that is wrong with how the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship is understood in Karnataka.
The scholarship exists precisely for students who feel that overseas education is financially out of reach. It is a Karnataka government programme, funded by public money, designed to ensure that SC and ST students from every district of the state have a real, funded path to postgraduate education at internationally recognised universities. The students who have used it are not exceptional cases. They are ordinary, eligible students who found out about the scholarship, verified their eligibility, started the application, and followed through.

Journey 1: The Engineer from Bengaluru Who Was Told He Was Too Old

He had been working as a software developer in Bengaluru for ten years when he first heard about the scholarship from a colleague. His first call to us was almost an apology: "I know I am probably too old, but I just wanted to check." He was 37. He had read on a website that the age limit was 35.
We told him the current IGCCD guidelines set the limit at below 40 for PG applicants. He qualified. His caste certificate was from a Karnataka Tahsildar office, his income certificate was current, and his BTech degree from a VTU-affiliated Bengaluru college was recognised for UK PG admissions. The only missing piece was IELTS, which he booked the same week.
Easy Admissions shortlisted three UK universities for him based on his engineering background and work experience: a Russell Group university in the North of England for MSc Data Science, and two mid-tier options. His SOP was drafted around his ten years of industry experience, which was actually a strength for this profile rather than a gap. The offer letter came from his first-choice institution in three weeks.
Outcome
Departed for the UK for September intake. Currently in the second semester of his MSc. Working part-time at a technology company in his university city. Plans to return to India with two years of international experience after completing the Graduate Route Visa period.
Journey 2: The Arts Graduate from Kalaburagi Who Did Not Think Her Degree Qualified

She was the first person in her family to complete a university degree. When she came across the scholarship, her instinct was that it was only for engineering or science graduates. Sociology, she assumed, would not be on any approved list. She almost did not call.
Social Sciences is one of the nine approved fields under the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship. Her BA Sociology from Gulbarga University was a perfectly eligible qualification for MSc Social Policy or Development Studies at UK universities. The challenge for her profile was not eligibility but documentation: her income certificate had lapsed, and her caste certificate was issued from a district office in another state where her family had previously lived.
We guided her through getting a fresh income certificate from the Kalaburagi Tahsildar, and a new caste certificate confirming Karnataka residency. This took three weeks. In parallel, we started the UK university application using her existing academic documents. Her university in England — a strong mid-tier institution with an excellent Social Sciences department and significant Indian student presence — issued a conditional offer within a month, pending IELTS. Her undergraduate degree had been taught in English, and the university accepted an MOI letter rather than requiring an IELTS score. No test needed.
Outcome
Completed her MSc in Social Policy in the UK. Currently working in the development sector in her university city on the Graduate Route Visa. The first person from her district, to our knowledge, to have studied at a UK university under this scholarship.
Journey 3: The BSc Biotechnology Graduate from Mysuru Who Chose Australia
Mysuru | SC Category | BSc Biotechnology, University of Mysore | Age: 24 | Destination: Australia
Her academic record was strong: 68% aggregate in BSc Biotechnology from the University of Mysore, with a final-year research project in agricultural biotechnology. When she came to Easy Admissions, she was undecided between UK and Australia. Her goal was to eventually work in agricultural science or food security policy, ideally gaining several years of international research experience before returning to India.
For her profile and career goal, Australia was the stronger recommendation. The University of Adelaide and the University of Western Australia both have globally recognised agricultural and environmental science programs. Australia's post-study work rights (up to 4 years for regional study) aligned better with her goal of building substantial international experience than the UK's 2-year Graduate Route Visa. The maintenance allowance also stretched further in Adelaide and Perth than in most UK cities.
Her IELTS score of 6.5 overall was already in hand when she first contacted us — she had taken it with a career migration plan in mind. The University of Adelaide issued a conditional offer for Master of Agricultural Science within three weeks. The IGCCD application was submitted simultaneously once her Mysuru district documents were confirmed current.
Outcome
Currently in her second year of the Master of Agricultural Science program. Working part-time with an agricultural research group at her institution. Eligible for 4 years of post-study work rights given regional university status. Plans to pursue PhD research in food security before returning to Karnataka.

Journey 4: The LLB Graduate from Hubli Who Almost Missed the Window
Hubballi | SC Category | LLB, Karnataka State Law University | Age: 29 | Destination: UK
He called us in the first week of July — the week that most consultants were telling students the September window had closed. He had heard about the scholarship from a friend two months earlier but had not acted on it, assuming it was too complicated for him to navigate alone. By the time he called, he believed he had missed September entirely.
His LLB from Karnataka State Law University was a strong qualification for an LLM at UK universities. Law is one of the nine approved fields. We told him honestly: September 2026 was possible but the margin was tight. His documents were largely in order. His only missing piece was IELTS. We identified a university in the UK with a highly regarded LLM program that accepted MOI letters from Karnataka State Law University graduates — his undergraduate teaching had been entirely in English.
The offer letter process moved fast through our direct university pipeline. His IGCCD application was already partially completed by the time the conditional offer arrived. The timeline was compressed but workable. From his first call to us to receiving his offer letter took 18 days.
Outcome
Completed LLM in the UK. Currently practising as a solicitor's assistant in London on the Graduate Route Visa. The experience of international legal practice has reshaped his career direction entirely toward international arbitration and trade law.
Journey 5: The Commerce Graduate from Mangaluru with an Income Question

Her family situation was the thing that had stopped her from even considering the scholarship. Her father ran a small business in Mangaluru with an annual income of roughly Rs 12 lakh — above the Rs 8 lakh threshold that the old Prabhuddha scheme used to reduce scholarship coverage to 50%. She had read about the Prabhuddha scheme online and concluded she would only get partial funding, which she calculated was not enough to make the program viable.
When she called us, our first clarification was that the current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship under IGCCD does not apply those income slabs in the same way. Her income certificate was required as a document, but her family's income level did not automatically reduce her scholarship entitlement under the current scheme. She should apply and let IGCCD assess.
Her BCom from Mangalore University was a strong base for a Master of Commerce or MSc Finance at Australian universities. We shortlisted Curtin University in Perth and Deakin University for her. She chose Curtin, in part because of Perth's lower living costs and in part because of Curtin's strong placement reputation in commerce and accounting. Her IELTS score of 6.0 met the requirement. Offer letter arrived in 23 days.
Outcome
Currently studying Master of Commerce at Curtin University, Perth. Living costs in Perth are well within the maintenance allowance with some supplementary income from part-time work. Eligible for 3 years of post-study work rights as a regional student. Plans to pursue a CPA qualification after graduating.
Journey 6: The PhD Student from a Small Town in North Karnataka
Gadag District | ST Category | MSc Chemistry, Karnatak University Dharwad | Age: 38 | Destination: Australia
He was a lecturer at a degree college in Gadag district when he first heard about the PhD provision under the scholarship. At 38, with an MSc in Chemistry and a decade of teaching experience, he had assumed that international doctoral study was not something the scholarship covered, or that his age would rule him out. The PhD age limit under the current IGCCD scheme is below 45. He was well within range.
His MSc in Chemistry from Karnatak University Dharwad was a strong qualification for a PhD in Chemistry or Environmental Chemistry at Australian universities. We identified the University of Adelaide as the strongest fit: excellent chemistry research programs, regional university post-study visa benefits, and a supervisor whose research interests aligned with his existing work on agricultural chemical residues in groundwater.
The PhD application process is different from a PG application: it required a research proposal in addition to the standard SOP. Easy Admissions worked with him over two sessions to develop a concise, credible research proposal aligned with the Adelaide department's current research priorities. His IELTS score of 6.5 was already in hand. The PhD offer — conditional on final IGCCD approval — came from Adelaide in four weeks.
Outcome
Currently in his second year of PhD research at the University of Adelaide. Published one paper in an international peer-reviewed journal in his first year. Eligible for 5 years of post-study work rights as a regional PhD graduate. His college in Gadag has kept his position open, expecting him to return as one of the few PhD-qualified chemistry faculty in the region.

Can a student from a small district like Gadag or Kalaburagi really access this scholarship?

What if my family income is above Rs 8 lakh? Journey 5 suggests it may still be possible.
Journey 5 is accurate. The old Prabhuddha scheme had income slabs that reduced scholarship coverage for higher-income families. The current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship under IGCCD does not apply those slabs in the same way. An income certificate is required as a document, but the income level does not automatically reduce or eliminate eligibility in the way the old scheme did. Call us to verify your specific situation before assuming income is a disqualifier.
How long does the whole process take from first call to departure?

Total time from first call to departure — including IGCCD processing, visa, and pre-departure — was typically 10 to 14 weeks. Starting as early as possible within the intake window is the single most important factor in making the timeline work.
