What This Guide Covers
We have published separate destination guides for studying in the UK and studying in Australia under the Dr. BR Ambedkar scholarship. This blog brings both together in one place and answers a more specific question: which universities within those destinations are the strongest choices for Karnataka SC/ST scholarship students, given your academic profile, funding structure, and September 2026 intake timeline?
Before choosing a university, confirm your eligibility using our Dr. BR Ambedkar scholarship hub page. Eligibility criteria, age limits, and income rules are all explained there.

How University Selection Works for Scholarship Students
I am S. Krishnamurthy, Senior Study Abroad Counsellor at Easy Admissions in Bengaluru. Choosing the right university under the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship is not the same as choosing a university for a self-funded student. There are three factors that apply specifically to scholarship students which most generic university guides completely ignore.
First, the university must be recognised under the current IGCCD Karnataka guidelines. Not every foreign university qualifies. Selecting a university and receiving an offer letter from an institution that IGCCD does not recognise means the offer letter cannot be used to complete the scholarship application. Easy Admissions verifies recognition before any application is submitted.
Second, the maintenance allowance (up to Rs 8 lakh per year or approximately GBP 7,500 to 8,000 for UK and AUD 14,000 to 15,000 for Australia) must be factored into city and university choice. A scholarship student studying in London or Sydney faces a larger gap between their allowance and actual living costs than one studying in Manchester, Nottingham, Adelaide, or Perth.
Third, and most urgently for June 2026, the university must still have open seats for September 2026. Many competitive Russell Group programs in Data Science, Finance, and Engineering are already at capacity. The options that remain open right now are the ones this guide focuses on.
UK Universities: Russell Group and Beyond
The UK has 24 Russell Group universities — the country's most research-intensive institutions. For Karnataka scholarship students, Russell Group universities are the strongest choice where the profile supports it. Here is an honest picture of what is realistic for September 2026 at this stage of the year.
September 2026 Availability: Honest Status as of Late June
Largely filled at Russell Group: MSc Data Science, MSc Finance, MSc Computer Science, MSc Artificial Intelligence at Manchester, Edinburgh, UCL, and Warwick. These programs filled months ahead of their stated deadlines.
Still open at Russell Group: Management, International Business, Marketing, Social Sciences, Humanities, Law (LLM), and Environmental Science programs at Glasgow, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, and Sheffield. These have remaining capacity and are realistic targets right now through Easy Admissions.
Strong mid-tier still fully open: Surrey, Essex, Brunel, Coventry, Hertfordshire, Leicester, and Northumbria remain largely open across most PG programs and are excellent options for Karnataka scholarship students whose profiles are competitive for these institutions.
Note on IELTS for UK universities: Most Russell Group PG programs require IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Some competitive programs at Manchester, Edinburgh, and UCL require 7.0. Mid-tier universities typically accept 6.0 to 6.5. If you have not yet taken IELTS, read our eligibility guide for the MOI waiver route that may apply to your profile.

| UK offers 1-year programs and 2-year post-study visa; Australia offers 1.5 to 2-year programs and up to 4-year post-study work rights for scholarship students |
Australia Universities: Group of Eight and Technology Network
Australia's Group of Eight (Go8) universities are the direct equivalent of the UK's Russell Group — the country's eight most research-intensive institutions. For Karnataka scholarship students, Go8 universities are the top tier, but Australia's Technology Network (ATN) institutions and regional universities offer strong outcomes and are often more accessible at this stage of the year.
Unlike the UK's primary September-only intake, Australia runs February and July as its main intakes with some September options. This gives Karnataka scholarship students more flexibility, though Easy Admissions is actively identifying which programs still have July and September 2026 openings.
Regional university advantage: Australian students who study at regional universities (outside major metro cities) qualify for extended post-study work rights of up to 4 or 5 years under the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485). Universities like Wollongong, Deakin, La Trobe, and Newcastle combine strong academics with lower living costs and longer work visa entitlements — making them particularly strong for Karnataka scholarship students who want maximum international work experience.

Which University Suits Your Profile: A Quick Matching Guide
How Easy Admissions Selects the Right University for Your Profile

| Easy Admissions shortlists UK and Australia universities for Karnataka SC/ST scholarship students with IGCCD recognition confirmed before every application |
University selection for a Karnataka SC/ST scholarship student is not a generic process. Easy Admissions applies four filters before recommending any university to a scholarship applicant:
IGCCD recognition confirmed first
Before any shortlist is prepared, our team checks that the university and specific course are recognised under the current IGCCD Karnataka scholarship guidelines. We do not recommend any university where recognition is uncertain.
Academic profile match
We match your UG degree, percentage, and field to universities where your application is genuinely competitive. A student with 58% in BCom will not be shortlisted for LSE. They will be matched to institutions where their profile is a strong fit and the offer letter is achievable within the September 2026 window.
Maintenance allowance fit checked
We cross-reference the scholarship maintenance allowance against the actual living costs in the university's city. Students are never placed in a city where the financial gap between their allowance and real costs is unmanageable without being clearly informed upfront.
Seat availability confirmed before application
Given the late-June timing, we contact universities directly to confirm remaining seats before submitting any application. We do not submit applications to programs that have already closed — that wastes your most valuable resource right now, which is time.
