Quick answer

If you are applying to study in Canada from Bangalore in 2026-2027, the three changes that affect almost every applicant are: the proof of funds requirement rose to CAD 23,448 for applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026; the Student Direct Stream no longer exists, so every Indian applicant goes through the regular study permit stream; and the Post-Graduation Work Permit now requires a CLB 7 or CLB 5 IELTS General Training score, not IELTS Academic. Easy Admissions' Bangalore counsellors build every student's file around these three points first, then handle university shortlisting, the provincial attestation letter, and the full visa file.

Most "study in Canada consultants in Bangalore" pages you will find right now still talk about the Student Direct Stream, still quote the old proof of funds figure, and say nothing about the language test rule that gets Post-Graduation Work Permits refused. That gap is the reason we wrote this guide. Everything below is checked against canada.ca and IRCC's own published guidance as of September 2026, and we have flagged the handful of places where official numbers are still catching up so you are not caught out.

Easy Admissions has been guiding Indian students through study abroad applications for 15+ years, is ISO 9001:2015 certified, and has guided 4,000+ students across our 12 offices in India, including our Bangalore office on Cunningham Road. Why Bangalore Students Are Still Choosing Canada in 2026-2027

Canada has tightened its international student program every year since 2024, and IRCC still plans to issue up to 408,000 study permits in 2026, including 155,000 to newly arriving students and 253,000 extensions for students already there. That is fewer than the 437,000 issued in 2025, but it is not a closed door. It means the system rewards a well-built file over a fast one, which is exactly where a Bangalore-based counsellor who reviews your documents before IRCC does makes the difference.

For Bangalore applicants specifically, Canada remains attractive for three practical reasons: post-secondary programs with co-op and applied learning components, a Post-Graduation Work Permit that can run up to three years for eligible programs, and Express Entry and Provincial Nominee pathways that convert Canadian study and work experience into permanent residence. None of that has changed. What has changed is how carefully your application needs to be built to get there.

What Actually Changed for Canada Study Permits in 2026-2027

This is the section most Bangalore-focused consultant pages skip, get wrong, or leave outdated. Here is what is actually true right now, each with the date it took effect.

The Student Direct Stream is gone, not paused

IRCC closed the Student Direct Stream and the Nigeria Student Express permanently at 2 pm ET on November 8, 2024. There is no transition period and no revival planned. Every Indian applicant, regardless of what a 2023 blog post might still say, now applies through the regular study permit stream. This is not necessarily bad news. It means officers assess your full profile rather than a fixed SDS checklist, so genuine, well-documented students are not penalised for the loss of the fast lane. It does mean processing takes longer and your Statement of Purpose and financial documents need to work harder.

Proof of funds rose to CAD 23,448 on September 1, 2026

IRCC adjusts the study permit financial requirement every September 1 in line with Statistics Canada's Low-Income Cut-Off. It moved from CAD 22,895 to CAD 23,448 for a single applicant outside Quebec, effective for applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026. This figure covers living expenses only. You still need to show first-year tuition and return travel costs on top of it, which for most Bangalore applicants brings total proof of funds above CAD 40,000 once tuition is added. If you applied before September 1, 2026, the older CAD 22,895 figure still applies to your file, but any application filed today needs the new amount.

Master's and PhD students no longer need a PAL or TAL

As of January 1, 2026, students enrolling in a degree-granting master's or doctoral program at a public designated learning institution are exempt from the Provincial Attestation Letter and Territorial Attestation Letter requirement. Graduate diplomas, certificates and microprograms do not qualify for this exemption, only full master's and doctoral degrees. Everyone else, including undergraduate and college diploma applicants, still needs a PAL from the province where they intend to study. Canada's national cap for PAL and TAL required applications sits at 309,670 spaces for 2026, distributed by province, so timing your application to your province's allocation matters more than it used to.

PGWP eligible fields are frozen, but check yours anyway

On January 15, 2026, IRCC confirmed the list of PGWP-eligible fields of study is frozen for the entire year at 1,107 eligible program codes. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree graduates remain exempt from this list entirely, meaning any field qualifies. College diploma and polytechnic graduates must be enrolled in a program tied to one of the 1,107 eligible Classification of Instructional Programs codes, generally in healthcare, STEM, skilled trades, agriculture or transport. If you are choosing a diploma program in Bangalore right now for a 2026 or 2027 intake, checking the CIP code before you enrol is not optional.

PGWP now needs a language score, and it must be IELTS General

Since November 2024, every PGWP application must include a valid language test. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates need Canadian Language Benchmark 7 in all four skills, roughly IELTS General Training 6.0 in each band. College and polytechnic graduates need CLB 5, roughly IELTS General Training 5.0 in each band. The detail that trips up the most students: IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP General or PTE Core for this. IELTS Academic, the version most students take for university admission, is not accepted for the PGWP application. Your test result also needs to be less than two years old when you apply. We now build a second, correctly-timed language test into every Canada-bound student's plan for exactly this reason.

Off-campus work is 24 hours a week, and co-op permits are gone for most placements

The off-campus work limit sits at 24 hours per week during academic terms, permanent since November 2024, up from the earlier 20-hour rule. Full-time work is allowed during scheduled breaks, capped at 180 days a year. Separately, as of April 1, 2026, post-secondary students no longer need a distinct co-op work permit for a required placement, such as a co-op term or internship, provided the placement makes up 50 percent or less of the total program. Your study permit alone now authorises it. If your program's placement is larger than that, you still need a separate co-op work permit.

The 150-day rule IRCC added in June 2026

On June 18, 2026, IRCC updated the internal manual its officers use to assess whether a student is meeting their study permit conditions. The update sharpens how officers track a student's active pursuit of studies, including breaks or leave from a program. Students should treat 150 consecutive days away from active study as a point to formally resume, change status, or leave Canada, and should not work during an unauthorised leave. This mainly affects students already in Canada rather than fresh applicants from Bangalore, but it matters for anyone planning to defer or pause a semester after arrival.

Why Work With Easy Admissions in Bangalore

Bangalore has no shortage of consultants offering Canada admissions help, from large franchise chains to single-branch agents. Here is what we do differently, based directly on the gaps we found while researching this guide.

  • We build your file against the current rule, not last year's. Your proof of funds target, your PAL requirement, and your PGWP language test plan are all set against the rule that applies on your actual submission date, not a template written a year ago.
  • We plan your PGWP language test during your program, not after. Because your language score must be less than two years old when you apply for the PGWP, and because IELTS Academic will not be accepted for it, we schedule this as part of your original study plan rather than leaving it as a post-graduation scramble.
  • We check PGWP eligibility before you enrol, not after you pay tuition. For diploma and polytechnic applicants, we confirm the program's CIP code is on the eligible list before you commit, since this single check determines whether the PGWP will be available to you at all.
  • 15+ years, ISO 9001:2015 certified, 4,000+ students guided, 12 offices in India. Our Bangalore team sits inside a national operation, so document verification and university relationships are not limited to one branch's experience.
  • We are upfront about what we do not control. No consultant can guarantee a visa outcome or change IRCC's processing times. What we control is the quality, accuracy and timing of your file, and that is what we focus on.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply to Study in Canada From Bangalore in 2026-2027

  1. Profile assessment and shortlisting (Month 1). We review your academics, budget and target field, then shortlist Designated Learning Institutions that match both your profile and PGWP eligibility rules.
  2. Language testing (Month 1 to 2). Book your admission-stage IELTS, PTE or Duolingo test. We also flag which students will need a second IELTS General Training test later for the PGWP.
  3. Applications and Letter of Acceptance (Month 2 to 4). We prepare and submit applications, track offers, and verify each Letter of Acceptance against IRCC's enhanced LOA verification system before you pay any deposit.
  4. Financial planning and proof of funds (Month 3 to 4). We help you plan toward the current CAD 23,448 living-expense threshold plus tuition and travel, choosing between a GIC, education loan or bank statement route based on your situation.
  5. Provincial Attestation Letter, if required (Month 4). For undergraduate and college applicants outside the master's or PhD exemption, we coordinate your PAL application through your chosen province before the study permit file goes in.
  6. Study permit application (Month 4 to 5). We compile and submit your complete study permit file, including a Statement of Purpose that reflects your actual study and career plan rather than a generic template.
  7. Biometrics, medicals and decision (Month 5 to 7). Processing for Indian applicants commonly runs in the 6 to 12 week range in 2026, longer in the May to August peak season, so we build in buffer time from the start.
  8. Pre-departure and arrival support. Once approved, we cover accommodation, banking, SIN registration, and your first weeks of off-campus work eligibility under the 24-hour rule.

Provinces, Cities and Universities Bangalore Students Pick

Ontario and British Columbia remain the most requested provinces among our Bangalore students, largely for Toronto, Mississauga, and Vancouver's technology and business ecosystems, though both carry the highest tuition and living costs in the country. Alberta, particularly Calgary and Edmonton, has grown in popularity for STEM and engineering programs with comparatively lower tuition. Atlantic Canada, including Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, is worth a serious look for students prioritising a lower total budget and a real shot at Provincial Nominee pathways, since these provinces received proportionally higher shares of the 2026 PAL allocation and are actively working to attract students displaced from oversubscribed Ontario and BC institutions.

Rather than naming specific universities, which change their intake and program eligibility every term, we shortlist based on your field, budget and PGWP eligibility during your one-on-one session. If you want to check your eligibility for a specific province or program before that session, use our free online eligibility calculator.

Cost of Studying in Canada in 2026-2027

According to Statistics Canada's most recent figures, published through the Government of Canada's official education portal, international undergraduate tuition averages CAD 41,746 per year and international graduate tuition averages CAD 24,028 per year for 2025-26, with both expected to rise modestly for 2026-2027. College diploma programs typically run lower, often between CAD 14,000 and CAD 22,000 per year, though this varies widely by institution and province.

Cost item Typical 2026-2027 range
Undergraduate tuition CAD 20,000 to 50,000 per year
Postgraduate tuition CAD 15,000 to 35,000 per year
College diploma tuition CAD 14,000 to 22,000 per year
Proof of funds, living costs (single applicant) CAD 23,448 minimum, from September 1, 2026
Study permit application fee CAD 235 (application plus biometrics)

Figures are indicative national averages from Statistics Canada and IRCC and vary by institution, program and province. Always confirm exact costs with your chosen institution before paying any deposit.

Document Checklist for Indian Study Permit Applicants

  • Valid passport with at least six months' validity beyond your intended stay
  • Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution
  • Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter, unless you qualify for the master's or PhD exemption
  • Proof of funds meeting the current CAD 23,448 living-expense threshold, plus tuition and travel
  • Academic transcripts and certificates, attested where required
  • English language test score meeting your institution's admission requirement
  • Statement of Purpose explaining your study plan and ties to India
  • Passport-size photographs meeting IRCC specifications
  • Medical exam results, if requested based on your program length or field of study

After You Graduate: PGWP, Work Rights and PR Pathways

A Post-Graduation Work Permit can run for up to three years depending on your program length, and it remains the main bridge between a Canadian degree and permanent residence. To qualify in 2026-2027, your program needs to be PGWP-eligible under the rules above, and your application needs the correct CLB 7 or CLB 5 IELTS General Training score attached, submitted within 180 days of your official program completion confirmation. From there, most Bangalore graduates work toward permanent residence through Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class or a relevant Provincial Nominee Program, both of which reward Canadian credentials and Canadian work experience earned during and after the PGWP period.

Mistakes We See Bangalore Applicants Make

  • Applying with an SDS-era mindset. Skipping detailed financial documentation because "the old process didn't need it" is the single most common reason files stall under the regular stream.
  • Booking IELTS Academic for the PGWP later. A perfectly good Academic score for university admission simply is not accepted for the PGWP application, and students often discover this only after graduating.
  • Showing exactly the old CAD 22,895 figure. Applications filed on or after September 1, 2026 need CAD 23,448, and a file that undershoots the current threshold risks refusal on financial grounds alone.
  • Choosing a diploma program without checking the PGWP field list. An attractive-looking private college diploma can be a dead end for the PGWP if its CIP code is not on the eligible list.
  • Forgetting the PAL for undergraduate and diploma programs. Only master's and PhD applicants at public institutions are exempt. Everyone else needs the attestation letter before the study permit application can even be submitted as complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Student Direct Stream still available for Indian students in 2026?

No. IRCC permanently closed the Student Direct Stream and Nigeria Student Express on November 8, 2024. All Indian applicants, and applicants from every other country, now use the regular study permit stream. There is no equivalent fast-track option currently available, apart from a shorter processing window for certain PhD applicants under the 2026 graduate exemption.

How much money do I need to show for a Canada study permit in 2026-2027?

For applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show at least CAD 23,448 in living expenses, on top of full first-year tuition and return travel costs. Applications submitted before September 1, 2026 are assessed against the earlier CAD 22,895 figure.

Do master's students need a Provincial Attestation Letter in 2026?

No, if they are enrolling in a degree-granting master's or doctoral program at a public designated learning institution. This exemption took effect on January 1, 2026. Graduate diplomas, certificates and microprograms are not covered by this exemption and still need a PAL.

Which IELTS should I take for the Post-Graduation Work Permit, Academic or General?

IELTS General Training. IRCC does not accept IELTS Academic for the PGWP application, even though Academic is the version most students take for university admission. CELPIP General and PTE Core are also accepted. Your result must be less than two years old when you submit your PGWP application.

Can I still get a PGWP if my college program is not on the eligible fields list?

Generally, no, if your program is a non-degree college or polytechnic credential and its Classification of Instructional Programs code is not on IRCC's list of 1,107 eligible programs, which is frozen for all of 2026. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree graduates are exempt from this restriction and remain eligible regardless of field.

How many hours can international students work off campus in Canada right now?

Up to 24 hours per week during academic terms, a limit made permanent in November 2024, up from the earlier 20-hour cap. Full-time off-campus work is allowed during scheduled academic breaks, up to 180 days per calendar year.

Do I still need a separate co-op work permit in 2026?

Not for most required placements. As of April 1, 2026, post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for a required work placement that makes up 50 percent or less of their total program. Your study permit alone authorises it. Larger placements or certain program types may still require a separate permit.

What is a Designated Learning Institution?

A Designated Learning Institution, or DLI, is a school approved by a Canadian provincial or territorial government to enrol international students. You can only get a study permit for a program at a DLI, and only some DLIs are approved to host students beyond the primary and secondary level. Always confirm an institution's current DLI number before applying or paying any fee.

Is a study permit the same as a student visa?

Not quite. Your study permit is the document that authorises you to study in Canada. Many applicants also need a Temporary Resident Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization to enter the country, and IRCC typically issues these alongside an approved study permit. In everyday conversation the terms get used interchangeably, but the study permit is the core document that controls your conditions of stay.

Can I get permanent residence in Canada after studying there?

Many Bangalore graduates do, most commonly through Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class or a Provincial Nominee Program, both of which value Canadian education and Canadian work experience gained through a PGWP. It is not automatic and depends on your occupation, language scores and the specific pathway's current requirements, which change periodically.

How early should I start my Canada application from Bangalore?

We recommend starting 8 to 10 months before your intended intake. With study permit processing for Indian applicants commonly running 6 to 12 weeks, and extending to around 16 weeks in the May to August peak season, plus 2 to 4 weeks for a Provincial Attestation Letter where required, a late start is the most common reason students miss an intake entirely.
