The Short Answer — Before Anything Else
The Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship and the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship are the same scheme. The Government of Karnataka issued an official order renaming it. The administering body (IGCCD, Dept. of Social Welfare), the purpose, and the target beneficiaries did not change.
However — and this is critical — several eligibility details on the internet still reflect the old Prabhuddha scheme rules, not the current 2026 IGCCD guidelines. If you have been reading old information, you may have the wrong age limit, wrong income rules, and wrong ideas about who qualifies. This article corrects all of that.
Why This Confusion Exists — and Why It Matters
![]() |
I am S. Krishnamurthy, Senior Study Abroad Counsellor at Easy Admissions in Bengaluru. Every week, students from across Karnataka call us having done research online — and they are confused. Some find articles about the "Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship" with one set of rules. Others find articles about the "Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship" with different rules. A few find both names mentioned together with no explanation.
The confusion is understandable, because the internet has not caught up with the official change. As of June 2026, major scholarship aggregator websites are still publishing the old Prabhuddha scheme details — including an age limit of 35 years and income-based scholarship slabs — as if these rules currently apply. They do not, or at minimum they do not reflect the current IGCCD implementation for 2026.
Getting this wrong has real consequences. A student who reads "age limit 35" and thinks they are too old will not apply — even if they are below 40 and fully eligible under the current scheme. A student who reads "income slab of 50% for families earning Rs 8 to 15 lakh" may assume they will not get full funding — when the current scheme's income treatment is different. These are not minor discrepancies. They are the difference between applying and not applying.
Prabhuddha vs Dr. BR Ambedkar — Side by Side
Here is a direct comparison of what the old Prabhuddha scheme said versus what the current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship says under IGCCD's 2026 implementation:

The Three Things That Actually Changed
Setting aside the name, here is what meaningfully changed when the Karnataka government transitioned from Prabhuddha to the Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship under IGCCD:
The age limit was raised — and this is the most important change
Under the old Prabhuddha scheme, the age limit for PG and PhD students was 35 years. Under the current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship as administered by IGCCD, the age limit is below 40 years for PG and below 45 years for PhD. This means students who were previously told they were "too old" at 36, 37, 38, or 39 are now eligible. If you were told you do not qualify because of your age — call us and verify with the current guidelines before accepting that conclusion.
The income slab structure is no longer prominently enforced under the current scheme
The Prabhuddha scheme had a clear income slab structure: 100% scholarship for families earning below Rs 8 lakh, 50% for Rs 8 to 15 lakh, 33% for above Rs 15 lakh. The current Dr. BR Ambedkar International Scholarship as implemented by IGCCD does not specify this income slab ceiling in the same way. An income certificate is required as a supporting document, but the current IGCCD guidelines do not impose a formal income cap in the same manner. Students from across income backgrounds within SC/ST categories are encouraged to check their eligibility directly with us before assuming they are ineligible on income grounds.
The administering body changed — IGCCD now runs it, not PETC
The old Prabhuddha scheme was administered through PETC (Karnataka Pre-Examination Training Centre) at petc.kar.nic.in. The current scheme operates through IGCCD (Indira Gandhi Centre for Career Development) at igccd.karnataka.gov.in. If you are finding information on the PETC website or the old PETC portal, that is outdated. The current application goes through IGCCD. The portal for 2026 is now open.
Many students and parents across Karnataka are unsure whether they qualify because different websites still publish outdated eligibility criteria. What Did Not Change — The Core of the Scheme
Despite the name change and the eligibility updates, the fundamental purpose and benefits of the scheme remain intact:
✅ SC and ST students of Karnataka — still the only eligible community
✅ Full tuition fees covered — still 100% of course tuition paid
✅ Maintenance allowance — still up to Rs 8 lakh per year or 75% of actual expenses
✅ Medical insurance — still included for the full duration abroad
✅ 33% women's quota — still reserved
✅ 5% disability quota — still reserved
✅ Approved fields of study — Engineering, Management, Sciences, Economics, Finance, Humanities, Social Sciences, Fine Arts and Law — still the same nine areas
✅ Karnataka domicile and permanent residency requirement — still mandatory

▶ This scheme is only for SC, not ST — incorrect, both categories are eligible
